Why is my hard drive so active when using Google Chrome?
The "Active Time" of my laptop's hard disk is always at 100% as represented by Windows Task Manger in the Performance tab. I'm wondering what is up with that.
I don't seem to have such a busy Google Chrome unless I'm running Windows too. So that seems fishy.
This hard drive is slow, and I should probably put an SSD in this laptop, an Acer E5-575-33BM, but I'd like to believe that I could still squeeze a little bit more performance out of its stock mechanical hard drive.
Luckily (maybe) I did a google search for "why is disk so active when using chrome" and came up with a page that has some tricks I want to try for reducing Google Chrome's heavy disk usage. These tips include things like disabling prefetching of links and page assets.
The advice I found comes from Win Help Online in their article titled, Fix Google Chrome High Disk Usage (100%) Problem. Check it out.
Edit: I noticed that on the page listed above, when it refers to "Also, disable the setting “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly”, that setting isn't listed in my recent version of chrome. The name of the setting appears to have been changed to "Preload pages for faster browsing and searching". Both are the same thing, it just seems that they changed the title of it under the Chrome settings.
For me going into "chrome://settings" and then "Advanced", and then disabling the "Preload pages for faster browsing and searching" seems to have reduced Chrome's usage of my poor hard drive. I'm happy about that.
