Before my FitBit died I loved how Fitbit would seamlessly share step data with MyFitnessPal. Now that my Fitbit is done and I'm getting a Mi Band 4, I needed something to count steps with and I decided to use the free Samsung Health app that is included with my Samsung phone.

The Samsung Health app counts steps very well. I even did a test of how well the Samsung Health app comares in step counting ability to the Fitbit Charge 2 and the old Mi Band 1S. They were pretty close.

But once I started using Samsung Health and I'd linked it to MyFitnessPal and enabled permissions for it to access all data, I could see that steps were being counted in S Health, but they weren't being shown in MyFitnessPal.

I read a couple of forum threads here and here, and then here's what I did first:

  1. Cleared the cache for the MyFitnessPal app
  2. Cleared the cache for Samsung Health app

That didn't result in my steps from S Health showing in MyFitnessPal, so following the advice from one of the forum threads, I went to the "Steps" menu of MyFitnessPal and I saw that my Fitbit tracker had a check mark next to it and my Samsung Health app didn't have a check mark next to it. What that meant was that the MyFitnessPal app was only looking for step data from the Fitbit, which is dead. I needed to check the checkbox next to the Samsung Health app. So I did that. See the images below.

I will say that that is what I needed to do, but step data from Samsung Health wasn't imported into MyFitnessPal right away.

What I did next was:

  • Clear the cache of the MyFitnessPal app
  • Clear the cache of Samsung Health

And it still didn't work.

Then I rebooted my phone ... and it worked!

Samsung Health step data is now shown in MyFitnessPal

The solution follows

Now it all works. Here's what seems to be the solution in a nutshell:

  1. From the "steps" menu of MyFitnessPal, make sure that "Samsung Health" is selected.
  2. Clear the cache of both the MyFitnessPal and the Samsung Health apps.
  3. Reboot the phone

Those seem to be the condensed version of steps I used to get things to work, without all of the extra steps from trial and error.

Good luck. And if this doesn't work for you, you might want to read those forum links I posted above.
