Ruminal Acidosis

"In many ways, goats are hardy animals, but those things which can kill them will take them out quickly. Ruminal Acidosis, which is easily avoided, is one of those "killer" things." "Ruminal Acidosis." 2010. 02 September 2010 <http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/ruminalacidosis.html>.

Acute and Subacute Ruminal Acidosis

""Acidosis is the most important nutritional problem that feedlots face daily and is a major challenge for dairies as well."1 Both the dairy and feedlot industries have continued to move to the use of more grains in their feeding programs. Relatively cheap grains have provided an excellent and economical energy source. But this has also resulted in an increasing problem with acidosis. It can appear in a variety of situations and with different clinical signs." New Developments in Understanding Ruminal Acidosis in Dairy Cows

"Feeding dairy cows for maximum milk production increases the risk of acidosis, which can reduce efficiency of milk production and jeopardize cow health. Ruminal acidosis occurs when the rate of VFA production in the rumen exceeds the rate at which the rumen environment can neutralize or absorb the acids. Carefully adapting the rumen to changes in diet, supplying adequate peNDF concentration, and reducing the fermentability of the nonfiber carbohydrate fraction are the main factors to consider in preventing ruminal acidosis."
