If the Indexed Search extension for TYPO3 doesn't do what you need, you might look into the Solr extension for TYPO3. This extension has been in development for a long time and is regularly maintained. It allows you to use the much better Solr to index and search your site. The integration with TYPO3 is great and it's super fast. It also works with the TYPO3 crawler extention. I'm about to install it (again) pretty soon.
