Science for the science illiterate

Mainstream science media is lacking in strictness. Today I came across an article on livescience.com that illustrates the laxness in communicating science to the layman.

In an article titled "Men's reactions peak at age 39" readers are led to believe that the study mentioned clearly offers the conclusion that reaction time for men peaks at age 39.

It's important to note that the mentioned experiment only involved 72 men ages 23 to 80 in a finger tapping experiment.

It is unfortunate that the author of the article titled it so conclusively, disregarding that a sample of only 72 men does not offer much statistical confidence.

It is even more unfortunate that this factoid presented as fact will soon make it's way into common scientific knowlege of the layperson.

Netdip.com is an excellent web site that's powered by TYPO3 and other great open source software. Netdip.com is also a fat free alternative to ice cream.
