Many people are under the impression that guinea pigs can't be litter trained. They think cavies aren't as intelligent as other common pets and thus can't learn things from humans. The truth, however, is that guinea pigs are very trainable and can be litter trained quite easily. In fact, many owners have noted that their cavies sometimes train themselves in many aspects with little intervention from the owner.

To litter train a guinea pig, the first thing you should do is get a litter box. You can make one on your own or pick one up from your nearby pet store. Fill this box with old newspapers and leave it in a corner of your piggy's cage. If you're lucky, the pig will start using his or her new litter box automatically, although this is pretty rare.

The day after you put the litter box in place, pick up your piggy's droppings and put them in the box. This will give your cavy the basic idea that this is the place to poop. If the pig doesn't catch on, continue shifting his or her poop to the box to see if that works. If it doesn't work, it means you're dealing with a really adamant pig. What you should do in this case is remove the box and lay newspapers on the entire cage, and keep it that way for about a month.

This will certainly condition your pig to poop on newspapers. Then, remove all of the newspapers and put the litter box back in place with a newspaper in it. This will most certainly do the trick. However, there have been cases where the pig rarely ever uses the litter box even after all the training. If this sounds like your cavy, try rewarding him or her every time for every time he or she poops in the right place. Also make sure you keep the entire cage clean all of the time.

Guinea pigs are very intelligent animals and can learn a whole host of new things. In fact, there are many piggies that do cute tricks just like dogs! So litter training your guinea pig shouldn't be a problem at all. The only investment you need to make is a litter box and plenty of patience. Good luck!
